WATERBORO – Elizabeth Harriet (Kellett) Champion, 88, of Waterboro, died peacefully on Aug. 5, 2026, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Betty was born on Jan. 16, 1938, in Sanford to Lawrence and Violet (Dobson) Kellett. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1956 and moved to suburban Philadelphia, where she worked as a service representative for Bell Telephone of Penn. She met and married Joseph Walker, and together they had a son, Scott. Betty and Joe would divorce after a few years. Betty took a job in telephone shopping at Sears, where she met and married John Champion. They purchased Small’s General Store in East Waterboro, which also was the post office. Betty became the postmaster at the East Waterboro Post Office for 30 years.

Betty was an avid stamp collector and volunteered on the Ben Franklin Stamp Club. She would visit area schools and talk about stamp collecting with students. This would be instrumental in her being celebrated as Postmaster of the Year. Service to her community continued when the Lioness Club was chartered as a project of the Massabesic Lions Club. Betty would serve as president, and under her direction, the club would start the Waterboro Library’s traveling bookmobile. When women were welcomed into the Lions Club, Betty jumped on the bandwagon. Some of her favorite projects were the plant sale, 50+ Luncheon, bean suppers, and all aspects of Bingo! Betty was a progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 54-plus years, John; and her brother, Raymond Kellett, Jr.

She is survived by her son, Scott Walker; and Betty’s companion, Lionel Belanger.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, at Bibber Memorial at Autumn Green in Alfred (47 Oak St). Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time. Inurnment will follow at 1 p.m. at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.
