Thousands of Pacific Gas and Electric customers in the Bay Area were without power Thursday morning due to Public Safety Power Shutoffs initiated by the utility. PG&E said the PSPS was carried out to prevent wildfire, citing the risk of high winds and dry conditions.
Here is the breakdown of customers impacted by the PSPS within the Bay Area, according to PG&E:
San Francisco: 1.
Peninsula: 1.
East Bay: 1505.
South Bay: 17.
North Bay: 2,052.
In a neighborhood off of Kirker Pass Road, just past the Concord Pavilion, neighbors said their power went off at around 3 p.m. in their area. PG&E anticipates power will be restored to regions in or near the Bay Area by Thursday afternoon that were affected by planned outages, the utility said.
.
Unlike previous outages that have happened in the area, neighbors said they did get text alerts from PG&E in advance that this outage would be coming. Many neighbors suspect large power lines on a nearby grassy hillside could present a fire risk.
Several recalled a similar outage that lasted for more than a day a couple of years ago.
“It’s a common thing for this particular area. I understand the need for safety, I appreciate that concern,” said Brandon Stracener, whose home was without power Wednesday afternoon and evening.
“There is an impression, I think, here that anytime there’s a five-mile-an-hour or higher wind, PG&E panics and shuts the power off. And I have to wonder if there are other things they could be doing to make things safer that require a little bit more investment in energy,” Stracener continued. Stracener was considering a late-night drive back to his office to complete the work he couldn’t do at home without power.
PG&E said it works to limit shutoffs to only the areas where conditions make them necessary.
“So we want to, again, make sure that we’re only shutting off power where we need to. And each of those locations has a different shutoff time based on the unsafe weather that’s forecasted,” said Dave Canny, PG&E Vice President for the North Coast Region, at a press conference earlier in the day on Wednesday.
But for the people who are experiencing the shutoffs, that does change the fact that they had to face a hot summer afternoon and night without power.
PG&E does list resource centers that are open for impacted residents to go to for ice and to charge their devices. However, neighbors in Concord felt frustrated that their nearest options were to go to Tracy or to Mill Valley, both more than 40 miles away.
PG&E also initiated Public Safety Power Shutoffs back in May of this year, which impacted hundreds of customers in Contra Costa County.
