Meccha Chameleon, the indie hide-and-seek game that launched on Steam two months ago, has cemented itself as one of the year's biggest hits. The game's developer posted a sales milestone update today, announcing that sales have surpassed a staggering 20 million copies.

The Steam post announcing the news is straightforward, plainly stating the new sales figure and thanking players for their support. Meanwhile, Meccha Chameleon continues to receive regular updates, with the most recent having arrived yesterday.

Meccha Chameleon sold its first 15 million copies in only a month, so its sales-pace has slowed somewhat. But an extra 5 million sales in one month is a result most other game makers would clamour for.

And while the game's peak concurrent player numbers have dropped - and are nowhere near the highs of June - the game still pulls in a regular daily audience of around 22,000 players (via SteamDB). Such has the game's success been that Meccha Chameleon has been one of the most played games in the US across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox.

It's been mostly smooth sailing for Meccha Chameleon, except for an unfortunate 24 hours when user-made maps were found to contain malware, just as the official Discord server was hacked. Both issues have since been resolved, but it was certainly wild to witness.

Meccha Chameleon's simple hook has made it a hit with streamers and fans of social co-op games. The game plays as an elaborate prop hunt where players paint themselves to blend into the environment. Rather than simply hiding among the clutter, the ability to paint your character introduces an element of creativity that's part of what made it so popular.
