The sentencing of a 19-year-old BMW driver has reignited questions about speeding, driver training and accountability

  • A judge suspended most of a sentence after a deadly 100 mph crash.
  • Two people died while a 12-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.
  • The case has reignited debate over speeding, training and punishment.

Reckless driving is something we enthusiasts occasionally hand-wave away. Stories like this one have a habit of resetting that attitude. A teen driving a BMW at triple-digit speeds collided with a Honda CR-V days after Christmas last year. Two people in the Honda died, and a child in the car is still recovering.

Despite the lifelong and life-ending impact, the teen in the BMW will serve just six months behind bars. Whether the issue is sentencing, driver education, or both, the case is likely to leave plenty wondering whether the system is keeping pace with today’s roads.

According to WBRC, Jason Anthony Scott pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Both stem from a December 27, 2025 crash in Charlotte, North Carolina. Scott, who was 18 at the time of the crash, is now 19.

Court records show Scott initially received a prison sentence of at least two years and seven months. However, Judge Matthew Osman suspended that term, ordering him to serve six months in jail followed by three years of probation. Scott also lost his driving privileges and must provide a DNA sample.

Investigators say Scott was allegedly driving a BMW coupe at roughly 100 mph (161 km/h) in a 45 mph (72 km/h) zone when he crashed into a Honda CR-V at the intersection of Ardrey Kell Road and Red Rust Lane. The impact sent the SUV into a light pole, killing driver Lorin Manley and rear-seat passenger Gloria Manley at the scene.

A 12-year-old girl riding in the front passenger seat survived after bystanders pulled her from the wreckage. Police said she suffered internal bleeding and a crushed pelvis. Scott sustained a broken arm and fractures to his back. While the legal case is largely settled, the debate brought on by the incident and sentencing will likely continue for some time.

That’s anything but shocking. Modern automobiles often rival sports cars from only a few decades ago regarding their performance capability. They’re also getting bigger and heavier all the time. Despite that, the licensing process in much of the United States has changed little over the decades. Infrastructure isn’t helping either, as plenty of roads, including where the crash happened, are wide open with little in the way to force drivers to travel at or very close to the speed limit.
