Microsoft will retire legacy whiteboards and the standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app by September 2026 as it transitions to OneDrive-backed whiteboards.
Enterprise customers must migrate any remaining legacy whiteboards before August 22, 2026, when migration tooling is retired.
Legacy whiteboards not migrated or exported by September 5 will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. The standalone app will be deprecated on September 14.
After deprecation, enterprise users will access Microsoft Whiteboard via Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft Whiteboard Retirement TimelineMicrosoft has established three key dates. On August 22, 2026, migration tooling for legacy enterprise whiteboards will be retired. After this date, remaining legacy whiteboards cannot be migrated. Also, users with personal Microsoft accounts will no longer be able to create or edit whiteboards.
On September 5, 2026, all remaining legacy whiteboards will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
On September 14, 2026, the standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app for desktop and mobile will be deprecated and no longer supported.
This change affects three groups. Enterprise customers with legacy Microsoft Whiteboard content must migrate to OneDrive-backed whiteboards before the deadlines.
Users with personal Microsoft accounts will lose the ability to create or edit whiteboards after August 22 and should export any content they wish to keep.
Organizations using the standalone app must transition to accessing Whiteboard through Microsoft Teams.
There is no recovery or migration option for legacy whiteboards after they are permanently deleted on September 5.
What Users Must Do Before Whiteboard RetiresSince deleted whiteboards cannot be recovered, affected users and administrators should act before the deadlines:
The migration tooling remains available until August 22, 2026, after which unmigrated legacy whiteboards can no longer be moved to the OneDrive-backed format.
Microsoft has confirmed the deletion on September 5 is permanent with no recovery option. Enterprise access to Microsoft Whiteboard continues through Microsoft Teams after the standalone app is deprecated on September 14, though Microsoft has not detailed whether any legacy whiteboard features will be unavailable in the Teams-based experience.
