Google will begin removing Google Assistant from mobile devices on September 4, 2026, and replacing it with Gemini, as reported based on emails sent to affected users.
The removal will take several weeks to complete. After access is removed, users will not be able to use or revert to Google Assistant on phones, tablets, or paired devices. This change also affects Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto projected from a phone.
Cars with Google built-in will continue to run Google Assistant beyond September 4.
What Google’s Assistant Switch CoversAccording to Google's email, Gemini will become the assistant experience on Android, and Google Assistant will no longer be available on mobile devices. Removal begins September 4 and may take several weeks. Once access is removed, users cannot use or revert to Google Assistant.
On devices that meet the minimum system requirements and are in a rOn devices that meet minimum system requirements and are in regions where Gemini is available, Gemini will replace Google Assistant.
Invoking the assistant, such as by saying "Hey Google" or long-pressing the power button, will launch Gemini instead., it also becomes the assistant on devices paired with the phone.
According to Google's email, this includes watches running Wear OS, headphones or earbuds compatible with Gemini, and vehicles running Android Auto projected from a user's mobile device.
Starting September 4, users will also lose access to Google Assistant on these paired devices. The exception is cars with Google built-in, where Google Assistant will continue to function beyond September 4, 2026.
Google states these changes apply only to the assistant experience on mobile devices and accessories paired to a phone, such as watches, headphones, and car infotainment systems. Plans to bring Gemini to Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, and smart displays are separate and not included in the September 4 mobile removal.
What Users Need to Do Before the SwitchUsers still relying on Google Assistant on mobile should prepare for the transition before September 4:
- Confirm that your Android device meets the minimum system requirements for Gemini and is in a region where Gemini is available, as these factors determine whether Gemini will become your assistant.
- Review any routines, shortcuts, or workflows built around Google Assistant, as you will not be able to switch back once access ends.
- Check whether your paired Wear OS watches and earbuds are compatible with Gemini, as these will switch to Gemini along with your phone.
- Cars with Google built-in will retain Google Assistant, so no immediate action is required for those vehicles.
Google will begin removing Google Assistant on September 4, 2026, with the process expected to take several weeks to reach all users. Google has not provided a firm completion date or specified which devices do not meet Gemini's minimum system requirements.
Users in regions where Gemini is not available have not received a separate timeline.
