In June, Derrick Boseman and Kevin Boseman announced the official launch of Boseman Family LLC, a creative and cultural company dedicated to storytelling, cultural expression, and purposeful artistic collaboration.
Formed in the fall of 2025, the company was inspired in part by the legacy of their younger brother, Chadwick Boseman.
“What inspired it was, of course, Chad had his own company, and there have been some offers that have come in to do work that is inspired by him, and we sort of felt the best way to tackle business, to partner with other businesses, was to start a business,” Kevin said in an interview with AfroTech.
Like his brother Chadwick, Kevin works in the arts. A Brooklyn-based performing artist, he has spent over 30 years working across theater, storytelling, and dance. He has performed with Ailey II, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Kevin has also been part of major productions such as “The Lion King,” “The Color Purple,” “Shrek the Musical,” “A Chorus Line,” “Ragtime,” and “Equus.”
Kevin’s brother Derrick took a different path. With more than three decades of ministry, mentorship, and community leadership, the longtime Tennessee resident’s career has centered on family support, youth development, violence prevention, and civic engagement. He currently serves on the board of Nashville Peacemakers, an organization that utilizes youth programming and mentorship to tackle issues like gun violence, gang violence, and sex trafficking.
Despite having different professional paths, their careers were built from the same foundation — family.
“Our parents taught us that when we are out in the world, we are representing the family,” Kevin Boseman said in a release shared by the brothers last month.
In search of a structure that could support the brothers’ shared work, spanning theater, film and television, live and celebratory events, education, and community programming, they built Boseman Family LLC.
Derrick told AfroTech, “I always ask God to put people in my path that will move me, or us, in the direction that he would have us to go in, and I have a friend who was always wanting me to meet somebody for a project, because of Chad, and for four or five years I always told him ‘No.’”
“The two people that I did talk to in the four or five year period, they didn’t seem right, so I didn’t want to deal with them,” he continued. “But, then, he wanted me to talk to these two ladies, and I went to talk to them, and they became our management team, and they’ve been very inspirational in everything that we’ve done.”
Actually, Boseman Family LLC is meant to be more than a business, the brothers said. “It is a legacy vehicle built to preserve our family’s vision, protect generational assets, develop leadership, and pass down wisdom, values, and opportunity to future generations,” Derrick explained.
The company’s launch came on the back of a successful run of their late brother Chadwick’s play “Deep Azure,” which made its UK premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, the company stated in its release.
Kevin recounted when his late brother wrote the play.
“After he left Howard [University], he moved to New York,” he said to AfroTech. “He lived with me for about nine months. I was dancing for Alvin Ailey at the time, and when I found out he was moving to New York, he was looking for a place, and I was like, ‘Why don’t you just stay in my apartment,’ because we toured about six months out of the year. I was on the road, so I was like, ‘Just stay in my apartment.’”
“It was wonderful to give him a soft landing place, because, of course, I didn’t charge him rent, and he was already a playwright. He had written a couple of plays, but I think he started working on that play, Deep Azure, when he was living with me, and I remember him, you know, talking about it. I saw the original production of it in Chicago, and was mesmerized and completely blown away by the structure, because it’s written in verse, like Shakespeare, and I think it was then that I was kind of like, ‘My brother is a genius.’ To write a modern play in verse, something that I hadn’t seen, but he was able to innovate verse and make it modern and add hip-hop to it, and seeing that play, I always wanted it to have more life, because I think that was the only main-stage big production of it. And I always envisioned it would be on a bigger stage, make it to Broadway. So, when Shakespeare’s Globe came to us, for me it was a no-brainer that such a venerable institution would be the first place to do it after his death.”
Chadwick died of colon cancer on August 28, 2020, after being first diagnosed with the disease in 2016.
Derrick said one of the ways that the family has processed its grief since the passing of the “Black Panther” star is by “continuing to move forward.”
“One of Chad’s plays is in London with Shakespeare’s Globe, but grief is such a tricky monster that it rises, and it falls, and there are, of course, five stages of grief, but they don’t come in any certain order,” he said. “So, in dealing with Chad, it’s like you come almost in and out of grief, over and over again, because, one, we’re dealing with it still, so in trying to keep his memory going, it also keeps our memories going. For every project that we put our hands into, for every question that’s asked about him, it always brings back all these memories. Grief is an ongoing process.”
The brothers hope that sharing their journey amid this new venture will encourage meaningful and open dialogue on grief, resilience, brotherhood, and healing from loss.
