The rumored Patrick Bateman actor may have spilled the tea on the new American Psycho.
Luca Guadagnino's American Psycho will offer a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel, which was previously brought to the big screen in 2000 with Bale starring as Patrick Bateman. While casting for the new movie has yet to be officially announced, Drew Starkey has been among the actors rumored for the central role and has already worked with Guadagnino on 2024's Queer.
While addressing the casting rumor with GQ, Starkey initially responded, "No comment," before adding, "The script is amazing, though." After being asked whether that meant he had read it, Starkey paused and then cussed before clarifying:
"I've read the script, but Luca's my friend. I think I've read all of his scripts."
Starkey's comments don't confirm that he will play Patrick Bateman, but they do establish that he has seen the screenplay for Guadagnino's American Psycho. Plus, his reaction to accidentally spilling that detail could mean that he may be in the running.
The screenplay Starkey praised was written by Scott Z. Burns, whose previous credits include Contagion and The Bourne Ultimatum. Casting for Bateman, meanwhile, has attracted considerable attention. Variety reported in December 2024 that Austin Butler was set to star in the role after Jacob Elordi had previously been rumored for the part, though no casting has ultimately been officially announced.
Interestingly, Starkey was already familiar with Ellis' novel before being linked to Guadagnino's adaptation. In a June 2024 interview with Interview Magazine, he revealed he was reading American Psycho, calling the book "brilliant" while also acknowledging, "It's quite violent." This was months before Guadagnino's adaptation was announced.
Casting Patrick Bateman presents an especially difficult challenge because of how closely the character has become associated with Bale. His performance in the 2000 movie has remained one of the actor's biggest roles more than 25 years later. However, Guadagnino's movie, being a new interpretation of Ellis' novel, allows its eventual star to create a version of Bateman distinct from the Oscar winner.
Starkey's previous roles have ranged considerably, from troubled teen Rafe Cameron in Netflix's Outer Banks to Eugene Allerton opposite Daniel Craig in Guadagnino's Queer. He has also appeared in the romantic drama The Other Zoey and the psychological mystery The Devil All the Time. While none of these characters is a direct parallel to Bateman, Rafe arguably comes closest, with Starkey portraying an affluent and increasingly unstable character capable of sudden violence.
Taking on Patrick Bateman would nevertheless push Starkey into different territory while reuniting him with a filmmaker who is already familiar with his work. His script admission makes the casting rumors more intriguing, particularly given his praise for the source material two years earlier. For now, however, Starkey's involvement in American Psycho remains unconfirmed.
