Nearly 15 weeks after Spirit Airlines' shutdown, another key part of its former infrastructure has been sold to a new owner. When an airline ceases operations, things with concrete connections to the day-to-day needs of aviation, such as aircraft and the slots at airports that they occupy, are among the most obvious assets that need to be moved on. However, this latest deal involves its old HQ.

Indeed, the sprawling facility, instantly recognizable for its yellow accents resembling the shade famously painted on the jets that made up the Spirit Airlines fleet, has reportedly changed hands for more than $93 million. The campus has been acquired by a Boston-based hedge fund, which won the auction despite its bid not being the highest.

Spirit's Former HQ Has Been Sold

As reported by Local 10 News, officials have confirmed that Hill City Capital has acquired Spirit's former HQ campus in Florida for the tidy sum of $93.25 million. According to reporting on the matter by the Miami Herald, this represented a slight increase over its first offer, which it tabled at $88 million last month. Interestingly, however, Hill City Capital was not the highest overall bidder.

Indeed, coverage of the sale by the South Florida Sun Sentinel notes that REM Acquisitions LLC had placed a $97 million offer for the HQ. However, a court filing on the matter posted Wednesday evening confirmed that this would have been an inferior alternative to Hill City Capital's 'stalking horse bidder' (the first pre-approved buyer to make an offer) position.

"[That bid] would have resulted in lower net proceeds to the Debtors’ estates after taking into account the amount that would have been payable to the Stalking Horse Bidder and certain other associated expenses."

The HQ Was Located In A Prime Spot For Spirit Airlines

The sale has not yet been finalized, with the Miami Herald noting that the New York bankruptcy court overseeing Spirit’s case must still approve it now that a preferred bidder has been selected. This will take place next Wednesday. The publication lists 1731 Radiant Drive in Dania Beach as the address, and notes that the Florida campus has a footprint of 8.3 acres.

Its location in Dania Beach, north of Miami, puts it between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood and, aptly enough, very close to the international airport that bears the names of both places. According to historical scheduling data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) was Spirit's top base by flights in its last full year of operations.

Indeed, 2025 saw the yellow-clad ultra-low-cost carrier schedule a grand total of 29,023 one-way flights from Fort Lauderdale throughout the year, offering a whopping 5,806,379 seats. Its second-largest base by scheduled flights last year was also in Florida, with 20,479 services and 3,915,105 seats planned from Orlando. Las Vegas ranked third, with some 16,138 flights.

15 Weeks Since Spirit's Demise

Spirit officially ceased operations in the early hours of Saturday, May 2. As such, this Saturday will mark 15 weeks since the carrier's unfortunate but somewhat foreseeable collapse. Since then, the landscape of US aviation has been in flux, with the likes of Breeze Airways and Frontier Airlines reshaping the domestic market. Its former airport slots have also become coveted assets.

Indeed, Simple Flying reported last month that JetBlue had had to part with the princely sum of $58.5 million in order to win a bid for 22 ex-Spirit slots at the small but mighty LaGuardia Airport (LGA). JetBlue has also been looking to fill the gaps in the market left by Spirit in Fort Lauderdale, where it is expanding operations and hiring ex-Spirit crew as it targets 150 daily flights at FLL.
