Clark County Fire Department Battalion Chief Adam Weiss said three people were treated for injuries at the scene. He said three people had to be extricated from the businesses in the mall because they were trapped by fallen debris.

Weiss said firefighters treated the response as a structural collapse. A technical rescue team performed the rescues.

“We were able to enter the structure from the back of the building, the sides of the building, and they were able to breach one interior wall,” he said of how the rescues were performed.

The collapse occurred on the 6100 block of West Flamingo Road near South Jones Boulevard.

Paul Chavez was walking near the building when the front of it tumbled to the ground.

“It just collapsed out of nowhere,” he said. “It sounded like lightning cracking. A big old boom. The dust and everything went flying up.”

He said the complex houses a Subway, a Marco’s Pizza, a smoke shop and an empty storefront.

Witness Nick Malis said he frequents a nearby cigar shop and had just gone to the Subway minutes prior to the large awning collapsing.

“It sounded like a bomb or something crashed,” Malis said, adding that he rushed back to the Subway, where he helped two women get out safely.

A third person was rescued from the pizza shop, he said. Malis said the part of the building that collapsed was noticeably sagging prior to it coming down.

“Coming here you could obviously see that the roof was bowed,” he said. “It wasn’t a surprise.”

Witness Maurice Giddings said “it was creaking first, then pow!”

A Clark County Fire Department truck briefly had a ladder extending to the roof of the building. The area was cordoned off by police, slowing traffic headed east and west on Flamingo, affecting traffic for hours.

The collapse of the front of the building on West Flamingo bore noticeable similarities to another partial building collapse in the Las Vegas Valley. In August of 2021 a wind storm caused the front of a mansard at La Bonita supermarket, 2500 E. Desert Inn Road, to tumble to the ground, leaving a huge pile of wood and rubble in the store parking lot near Eastern Avenue. Four people suffered minor injuries. The store reopened nearly three years later.
