For the Budget Buildz crew, the mission was simple enough to say out loud — “Lets rescue Dad’s dream car!” — but far harder to pull off. Their latest project, a 1969 Corvette convertible, had been sitting untouched in a barn since at least 1995, a full 31 years without firing a single cylinder.

“One of dad’s dream cars, a 1969 Corvette,” the son says as the video opens, excitement already creeping into his voice.

This one was a true old school hot rod: non factory side pipes, a big block hood, 1970 side louvers molded in, and Daytona Yellow paint peeking through the aging finish. Even the tires were relics — “a set of Cooper Cobra radial GTs… very 80s.”

car carried family history, too. “My grandmother used to drive a 68 big block four-speed convertible sidepipe car,” he explains. “Now, this is not quite that, but it’s on its way there, and it should be a ton of fun.”

A little detective work revealed the Corvette’s small-block Chevy wasn’t original, but it was still intriguing. An Edelbrock Torquer intake, Mallory distributor, Promaster coil — and plenty of mouse debris.

A closer look revealed a 1970 CNJ suffix 350, originally a 300 horse engine used in Chevelles, Novas, and Camaros. “Not numbers matching, but that still should be a great engine,” he says.

Then came the surprise: clean spark plugs and visible crosshatch in the cylinder walls.

“Holy smokes. What the crosshatch? Was this thing freshly built?”

The engine turned smoothly by hand. Oil drained clean. The filter showed “absolutely nothing. No material, no bearing, nothing.”

Everything pointed to a healthy engine waiting to wake up.

With fresh plugs, a temporary ignition setup, and a boat tank feeding fuel, the big moment arrived.

“Y’all ready?”

The starter struggled, then caught. A cough, a pop — and suddenly the Corvette roared back to life.

“Woo! Yeah. Yes. Woo.”

It wasn’t perfect. An exhaust gasket was missing “a whole chunk,” and the radiator immediately “puked everywhere.” But the engine itself sounded strong.

“It sounds really good. No knocks.”

Oil pressure checked out at nearly 50 PSI: “Instantly almost 50 PSI like that.”

Dad stood quietly, taking it in. His son teased him: “You’re supposed to be the one that’s like jumping up like a little girl. Come on, get excited.”

The radiator was a disaster — “one big green booger” — and the water pump was missing a bolt, half of it snapped off inside the block. The thermostat was warped and stuck open.

The team drilled out the broken bolt, patched the radiator with RTV (“basically a new radiator at this point”), and got the cooling system stable enough for testing.

When the engine fired again, it ran smoother and quieter.

“It’s so smooth.”

“That’s about as quiet as one gets right there.”

The Corvette’s four wheel disc brakes were beyond saving.

Calipers leaked.

Hoses crumbled.

Bleeders clogged.

One corner didn’t get fluid at all.

“Those calipers are junk.”

Driving the car today wasn’t an option — especially with fiberglass bodywork already cracked and brittle.

By the end of the rescue, the Corvette sat idling beautifully, sounding every bit the part of a 1970s street machine. The frame looked solid. The birdcage was clean. The engine was healthy. The car was absolutely worth bringing back.

“Well, we at least know we’ve got a really, really good running hot rod Corvette,” he says.

And after three decades asleep, that was victory enough for one day.
