YouTube channel ETA Prime has demonstrated that AMD’s premium Strix Halo APU is more than capable of delivering serious gaming on a laptop—using an ASUS TUF Gaming A14. This model has Radeon 8060S graphics paired with a 12-core / 24-thread AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 392 processor, 32 GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory (16 GB is dedicated to the iGPU), and 1 TB of storage. While not exactly what most would consider a budget-friendly offering, it is capable of a lot given its $1,999.99 price tag, although many would agree that more storage would be nice.
ETA Prime jumped through some hoops to get SteamOS 3.9 installed and once again proved that Valve is perhaps missing out on directly supporting laptop gaming with its operating. While it has not directly blocked or restricted SteamOS from being used, support for such has largely fallen on the community to find ways to support it. That being said, ETA Prime showed some impressive results in their testing which did not use frame generation.
The laptop features a 14″ display with a resolution of 2500×1600 @ 165Hz. The 16:10 aspect ratio is very common among modern gaming laptops, ranging up to 18″.
Brief gaming metrics breakdown (per Notebookcheck):Of course, performance isn’t the only thing to be considered when gaming on the go. Lowering the resolution further allowed for between four and seven hours for games such as Hollow Knight: Silksong at 1200p/60 FPS. However, much more demanding AAA games such as Cyberpunk 2077 clocked in at just under 2 1/2 hours at 800p/60 FPS. Regardless, it is impressive to see what modern high-end APUs are capable of and how SteamOS is a viable solution for laptop gaming.
