Every family staycation has a moment when you know it’s going to work. Ours came about an hour after check-in at Fairmont The Palm, watching the kids disappear towards the water at Bask Beach Club while a very good lunch was still being cleared from the table. Nobody was negotiating. Nobody was asking what was next. The weekend had simply started organising itself.

Fairmont The Palm has been on Palm Jumeirah since the island’s early days, and it wears that experience well – an Arabian-style resort on the trunk’s West Beach side, with the Gulf out front, the Marina skyline across the water and the rest of Dubai just minutes behind you. It doesn’t chase gimmicks. What it does instead, better than most beach resorts in the city, is food – and for families who plan their weekends around meals as much as pools, that changes the shape of the whole stay.

Bask sits directly on West Beach and became the default setting of our weekend within the first afternoon. It’s that increasingly rare thing – a Dubai beach club that genuinely wants children there – with beach games and activities for the kids running alongside a proper grown-up operation of loungers, cocktails and unhurried afternoons. The sand shelves gently, the water is calm, and the sunset view towards the skyline is the reason you’ll stay past the point you intended to.

If the beach club was the kids’ highlight, this was ours. Serenity – The Art of Well Being, the resort’s Portuguese-inspired spa, has two dedicated couples rooms, and the 60-minute couples relax massage we took in one of them was, without exaggeration, the best hour of the weekend. Here’s the detail that makes it possible for parents at all: book a treatment and your children get a complimentary two-hour pass to the Falcons Kids’ Club while you’re in there. It is, functionally, childcare attached to a massage – and it works exactly as well as that sounds.

Build in time either side of your treatment, because the Thermal Oasis is half the experience: a circuit of rainforest shower, sauna, steam room and an ice fountain for the brave, with jacuzzi relaxation areas to dissolve into between rounds. We arrived early, left late, and surfaced to find the children mid-activity at the kids club and in no hurry to leave – which is the correct outcome in every direction.

This is where Fairmont The Palm pulls away from the pack. Seven restaurants and lounges sit within the resort, and across one weekend we barely repeated a cuisine. Lunch at Seagrill, the Mediterranean bistro with its wood-burning grill and sea views, set the tone on day one; dinner that night was Frevo, the Brazilian churrascaria where servers carve skewers of meat at the table – pure theatre for children, who treated each arrival like a magic trick, and dangerously moreish for adults. This was seriously among some of the best selections of meat we’ve encoutnered. The meat sweats are inevtiable, but you’re grateful for them. Worth it.

Saturday brought afternoon tea at Mashrabiya and then the weekend’s big hitter: Little Miss India, listed in the Michelin Guide for four consecutive years and easily one of the most transporting rooms on the Palm. Sunday closed with a lazy breakfast at Flow Kitchen and a beachside lunch at Blowfish before checkout.

If you take the full-board route, as we did, the honest advice is to pace yourself – the temptation is to treat every meal as the main event, and by Sunday you will need the beach as much as want it.

We stayed in a Deluxe Heritage Palm Sea View room – king bed, plenty of floor space for the kids’ inevitable sprawl, and a view over the pools to the Gulf that made the first coffee of the morning a small event in itself. The style throughout leans classic Arabian resort rather than boutique-modern: warm, generous and built for families rather than photographed for them. Interconnecting options and the sheer size of the standard rooms make the logistics easy for bigger groups.

There’s no waterpark here, and families chasing slides and wave pools should know that going in – this is a different kind of weekend. What Fairmont The Palm offers instead is a rhythm: beach club mornings, a kids club that buys parents a couples massage, and evenings built around restaurants good enough to be destinations in their own right. It’s the staycation for families who believe dinner is part of the entertainment – and after a weekend of eating our way around it, so do we.
