Only Fools and Horses is Britain's all-time favourite TV show, data suggests.

The rib-tickling 1980s sitcom, which follows wheeler-dealer Del Boy Trotter through his numerous failed attempts at get-rich-quick schemes, is viewed favourably by 76 per cent of the British public.

Followed closely behind is David Attenborough-narrated nature documentary series Planet Earth, which first aired in 2006.

Some 75 per cent of viewers enjoyed the BBC programme's stunning visuals, which captured extraordinary scenes of Earth's most extreme habitats and wildlife.

In terms of a general audience, John Cleese's Fawlty Towers ranks third, with 70 per cent popularity.

Top of the Pops, which was cancelled in 2006, with the exception of annual Christmas and New Year specials, ranks joint fourth with a popularity of 68 per cent, alongside another Attenborough masterpiece, Blue Planet II.

The survey data comes from YouGov's ratings collection, described as the 'biggest and boldest attempt ever made to quantify what Britain thinks'.

The project is based on millions of daily responses from the British public on topics ranging from opinions on David Attenborough to the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, food and politics.

For this dataset, pollsters asked the public what they thought of hundreds of TV shows.

Popularity was classified as the percentage of people who had a positive opinion.

Favourite shows vary between generations. 

While the UK seems to universally love Only Fools and Horses and Planet Earth, Dad's Army is only popular with Baby Boomers (83 per cent) and Gen X (62 per cent).

It does not appear in the top 100 for millennials.

Planet Earth is the favourite show of the millennials (89 per cent popularity) followed by Friends (80 per cent), MasterChef (79 per cent) and Mr Bean (76 per cent).

Gen X most love Only Fools and Horses (85 per cent), then The Two Ronnies (79 percent) and The Chase (79 percent).

Boomers' favourite show is 70s Ronnie Barker prison sitcom Porridge, with 87 per cent having a positive view of it.

This is followed by sketch duo Morecambe and Wise (83 per cent) and wartime comedy Dad's Army (83 per cent).

Men and women also have differences in their favourite TV shows. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley comedy Absolutely Fabulous is the fourth favourite show of British women, with 71 per cent loving it.

However, the show is 89th on the men's list, with just 54 per cent have a positive rating.
