London Games darling Missy Franklin has crashed out of the women's 200m freestyle, but superstar Katie Ledecky has picked up the slack.

Franklin, who captured four gold medals and the hearts of everyone back home in the US with her bubbly personality in 2012, finished last in her semifinal heat at the Olympics in Rio on Monday.

Moments later, Ledecky placed second, securing her a spot in the final and giving her the chance to bring home another gold for Team USA.

Disappointment: Missy Franklin has crashed out of the women's 200m freestyle, finishing last in her semifinal heat

Success: Superstar Katie Ledecky placed second, securing her a spot in the final in Rio

Franklin's time was only the 13th-fastest among 16 swimmers. She touched in 1 minute, 57.56 seconds, which was actually slower than her time in the afternoon preliminaries.

As a bubbly, 17-year-old high schooler in 2012, Franklin competed in seven Olympic events.

She won four golds and a bronze at the London Games.

But she's endured a mystifying loss of form since turning pro last summer, struggling to qualify for just two individual events and a relay at the U.S. trials.

All she's got left is the 200 backstroke and a likely spot on the 4x200 free relay team.

Crashed out: Franklin's time was only the 13th-fastest among 16 swimmers. She touched in 1 minute, 57.56 seconds

Ledecky touched in at 1 minute 54.81 seconds and she will swim in the women's 200m freestyle final on Tuesday evening.

Ledecky won gold in her only London race — quite an accomplishment for a 15-year-old — but her triumph was dwarfed by Franklin's long shadow.

Now, it's Ledecky who is poised to be the biggest women's star in Rio. The 19-year-old already has two medals and one world record, blowing away the field Sunday night in the 400-meter freestyle.

By the time Ledecky is done, she very well could have four golds and a silver, which would surpass Franklin's medal haul in 2012.

Superstar: Ledecky (centre) touched in at 1 minute 54.81 seconds and she will swim in the women's 200m freestyle final
