Winter isn’t quite finished yet, but there’s a definite shift in the air. The days are getting lighter, the promise of spring is on the horizon and the urge to swap heavy coats for lighter layers is very real. This in-between season always has me reassessing my outerwear – and this year, one piece has risen to the top of my wish list: a barn jacket.
I’ll admit, I’m late to the party. Barn jackets have been quietly gaining momentum for a few seasons now, but I tend to take my time warming to certain trends (barrel-leg jeans are a prime example). Once associated mainly with countryside walks or festival dressing, they’ve since evolved into a genuinely versatile staple – ideal for unpredictable weather, when mornings are crisp and afternoons feel almost spring-like.
When it comes to shopping, there’s no shortage of choice. Classic, heritage-inspired styles can be found at brands like Barbour and FatFace, while high-street favourites including Marks & Spencer, Next and Tu Clothing are offering their own modern takes. Prices span a wide range too, making it easy to find something that suits both your wardrobe and your budget.
Marks & Spencer, in particular, has several barn jackets on my radar right now – from waxed utility styles to padded cotton designs and faux-leather-collared options that feel especially polished. John Lewis also delivers with elevated, detail-driven versions, including corduroy-collared silhouettes and utility-inspired cuts from brands like Whistles and Part Two.
Elsewhere, Nobody’s Child brings a slightly softer, more contemporary feel, while Matalan proves that a well-cut barn jacket doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. In short, whether you’re looking for something classic or a little more modern, there’s a barn jacket to see you through the final weeks of winter and well into spring. So keep scrolling.
