Barbados Tridents will invade Sabina Park in their opening game tonight and try to spoil Jamaica Kingsmen’s first homecoming, when the teams clash in the 2026 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), at 7 p.m.

Tridents will be keen to start their campaign on a winning note and put added pressure on the Kingsmen, who suffered a narrow defeat to the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in their opening match last Friday.

“Every campaign is shaped by how you start it, and doing that on the road adds an extra edge. A strong result away from home sets the tone for the group, it tells everyone, players and fans alike, that this team means business from ball one,” said Andrew Richardson, team manager of Barbados Tridents.

“We’re not looking past it as just game one. How we perform tonight will carry momentum into everything that follows,” added Richardson.

After a seven-year hiatus, playing before a home crowd could provide extra motivation for the Kingsmen.

However, they will need to deliver a more disciplined and clinical performance across all departments.

EMOTIONS

Despite his Jamaican roots, the Trident official says his emotions will have to take a back seat when he steps onto Sabina Park in Barbados colours.

“Walking into Sabina Park in a Tridents shirt, on the opposite side to where I grew up supporting West Indies cricket, is a strange and special feeling, but once the game starts, I’m fully focused on getting a result for Barbados,” said Richardson.

“It means a great deal. Jamaica gave me my start in this game, and to have CPL back here, with Jamaica’s own franchise now part of the competition, is something the whole cricketing world has waited for,” added Richardson, who is a former West Indies and Jamaica Tallawahs player.

Richardson’s breakthrough came in his second first-class season, in 2003-04, when his 36 wickets made him Jamaica’s leading wicket-taker.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE

According to Richardson, adapting to the atmosphere and conditions at Sabina Park will be among the biggest challenges facing his team when they take on the Jamaica Kingsmen.

“Sabina Park is one of the great grounds in world cricket, and playing there with a home crowd fully behind Jamaica’s new franchise is going to be a serious atmosphere. That is a challenge in itself, blocking out the occasion and playing our own game,” Richardson told STAR SPORTS.

“Conditions-wise, we’ll need to adapt quickly. It’s a different surface and pressure than what we’ve been training on during pre-season camp back in Barbados. But our squad has players who’ve played all over the world, so we’ll lean on that experience,” he added.

The last time both teams met was in 2023, in the T20 CPL, and the final score saw the Tallawahs scoring 160/7 (20), in a loss to Barbados Tridents, who scored 161/4 (19) and won by six wickets, with an over to spare.

Both franchises have played 22 games, with Jamaica winning 11 to Barbados 10.

STATEMENT

The former right-arm bowler believes the Kingsmen’s hunger to make a statement in their first home game makes them a dangerous opponent.

“Any new franchise playing its first home game, in front of its own crowd, is dangerous. There is nothing to lose and everything to prove. We’ll be respectful of that energy and make sure we’re not caught up in the occasion ourselves,” said Richardson.

“I expect us to play with intent and discipline. We’ve built a squad that blends serious international experience with some outstanding young Barbadian talent, and I want to see that mix show up from the first ball.”

Richardson said, noting the senior players setting the tone, and the younger players playing with freedom rather than nerves.

“A win would be the ideal start, but more than the result, I want to see the identity of this team on display,” he added.
