Ideally situated in the heart of the city, Al Koot Fort originally dates to the Ottoman period; though it was refurbished in 1978, it still provides insights into traditional architecture. Near Al Koot Fort is Souq Waqif, a historical marketplace which is more than a century old. Located approximately 20 km from the city, the Barzan Towers date to 1910 and were constructed during the time of Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani. Made from limestone and coral rock, the rectangular watchtower reaches a height of around 16 metres and not surprisingly, “Barzan” in Arabic, means “High Place”. It’s a great place to take photographs and enjoy stunning vistas from the observation deck.
