State elected leaders, educators, students and employers gathered Friday in DeKalb County to celebrate Alabama’s commitment to career and technical education and launch Alabama Career Pathways, a statewide initiative designed to connect more students with high-quality career opportunities and strengthen the state’s workforce.

The event highlighted Alabama’s investment in career and technical education, including $100 million appropriated in 2025 to expand and modernize facilities across the state and an additional $150 million invested in 2026.

The funding helped make possible the DeKalb County Career Technical Education Center, a planned $40 million, 95,000-square-foot facility in the Rainsville Industrial Park. State leaders unveiled renderings of the facility during the event.

Leaders also unveiled the Alabama Career Pathways brand and introduced the initiative’s website, which will provide information about the state’s growing network of career pathways to students, parents, educators and employers.

The event included the release of Alabama’s Career and Technical Education Strategic Plan. State education leaders, economic developers, employers and industry organizations from across Alabama collaborated to develop the roadmap. The plan is intended to complement broader statewide economic development strategies, including Catalyst, and align workforce development efforts with Alabama’s long-term economic priorities.

House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter said Alabama’s commitment to workforce development is helping position the state for sustained economic success. Ledbetter has taken a leading role in developing the state’s focus and strategy on career and technical education.

“Every major economic development win begins with a skilled workforce,” Ledbetter said. “The Legislature has made Career and Technical Education a priority because we know these investments create opportunities for students, support Alabama businesses and make our state even more competitive for future job creation. Alabama Career Pathways represents the next chapter in that commitment, and I am proud to see it come to fruition for our state’s students.”

Business leaders said Alabama’s workforce success depends on continued collaboration between education and industry.

“One of Alabama’s greatest competitive advantages is the willingness of the public and private sectors to work together,” Manufacture Alabama President and CEO Jon Barganier said. “Industry helped shape this strategic plan because employers know the skills needed in today’s manufacturing and industrial economy. By bringing education leaders and employers together, we’re ensuring students graduate with the skills businesses are looking for and that Alabama remains a top destination for investment and job creation.”

Former student Nick Sapp also spoke about how career and technical education changed the trajectory of his career.

“Career and Technical Education gave me direction, confidence and skills I use every day,” Sapp said. “It opened doors I never imagined and put me on a path toward a meaningful career. I’m living proof that these programs don’t just teach technical skills—they change lives.”

Alabama Career Pathways seeks to increase awareness of career and technical education opportunities and help students identify clear routes from the classroom to high-demand, high-wage careers in the state’s key industries.

The initiative builds on Alabama’s workforce development efforts by strengthening partnerships among K-12 schools, community colleges, employers and economic development organizations.
