The president said he ordered the demands raised in any future negotiations after Tehran sought its own compensation
President Donald Trump on Monday demanded that Iran compensate Americans killed or seriously wounded in attacks he blamed on Tehran, while also calling for payments to the families of Iranian protesters killed by the regime.
The president also said he had instructed his representatives to raise his compensation demands in any future negotiations with Iran.
Trump’s remarks came after senior Iranian officials demanded compensation from Washington as part of Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
"I see that Representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran are asking for compensation for the damage done to them during the last five month Military Conflict (started because, THEY WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON), even though it was never mentioned in any of our negotiations or meetings!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The US should say if to the Iranian regime, “are you going to compensate the families of the 40,000 Iranian citizens that you killed?”

They want nukes. Drop a couple on them. Walkers are walkers. They can take a hit.

Iran really doesn’t want anything with these demands. Just to waste time (and to look tough to their own citizens).

Iran is not going to willingly agree to give up their money or their weapons. Those things have to be taken from them by force.
What started out as a well-intentioned mission in the spring has disintegrated into grade school theatrics. Trump doesn’t really have to say much as he commands the most powerful military in the world. Tuco said it best.

Rather than finding points of agreement to work towards a settlement, both sides are diverging, thinking up new things to argue about. This conflict will drag on in on-again/off-again fashion for a long time. The US doesn’t want to admit failure but won’t do what it takes to win, and the Iranian regime is confident they have weathered the worst and can now outlast their adversaries.

In many ways this has degraded into a farce. And who is responsible for that?
Well, your mileage may vary.
One thing I know for sure is this mess has made many of my swing voter friends wobbly. Throw insults at them as might be appropriate.
But each of them has the same number of votes of the most MAGA guy on the planet.

What chapter in “The Art of the Deal” is this result in?

Tehran seeks war reparations
Some called it on another thread.

By mid-April 2026, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani publicly stated that war reparations/compensation for damages was one of the key issues in negotiations with the US (including the Islamabad talks). She referenced a preliminary damage estimate of around $270 billion and noted that more precise assessments (buildings, revenue losses, industrial impacts) were underway.
In May 2026, Iranian state media and reports described Tehran’s peace proposal as including reparations for destruction caused by the US-Israeli campaign, alongside US troop withdrawal from areas near Iran and other terms.
This carried into the June 2026 Islamabad MoU (a 14-point framework for a ceasefire, reopening Hormuz, sanctions relief pathways, frozen-asset release, and further talks). Iranian officials repeatedly described compensation/reparations for war damage as part of the understanding or related reconstruction provisions (a US-linked plan for at least $300 billion in reconstruction/economic development was included; sources indicated Iran had sought higher direct compensation figures). Iranian statements after the MoU (e.g., mid-June) confirmed a clause or commitment on war-damage reparations alongside frozen-asset release.
In early August 2026 (around August 8–9), as Iran-Oman talks advanced on shipping arrangements, Iranian officials (including Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi) explicitly listed compensation/reparations for war damage (plus ending the naval blockade, sanctions relief, frozen-asset release, US force withdrawals, and protections for regional allies) as conditions for fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

So this is what Trump’s War has devolved to.
A series of back and forth useless demands between Tehran and Washington.

The Insanians have learned that they can hold the whole world hostage with very mild actions and threats in the Straits. Really does not take much. Their leverage for so little exceeds their wildest dreams. They can just about stop tankers with a ZiP Gun. This is now just a game to them but very expensive for the rest of us.
If you are negotiating and go at it like a madman with nothing to lose you will likely win. It is like a Mexican Standoff with hand grenades and only one is crazy enough to just pull the pin and let ‘er rip. You don’t want to try negotiating with that guy.
