Xbox Series X/S prices rise again across major markets, with Microsoft increasing console prices in the US, UK and Europe from August 1, 2026. The move comes at a difficult moment for console buyers, with Grand Theft Auto VI expected to drive fresh demand for current-generation hardware later this year.

The company first confirmed the worldwide price update in an Xbox Wire announcement on June 25, citing a sharp rise in storage and memory costs. A separate IGN India report highlighted the fan backlash after the updated regional prices appeared for the UK and Europe.

The updated prices apply to the current Xbox Series X and Series S lineup. Microsoft is also discontinuing the 2TB Xbox Series X model, making the latest Xbox price hike a broader reset of its console hardware strategy.

US pricing
  • Xbox Series S 512GB: $499.99, up from $399.99
  • Xbox Series S 1TB: $599.99, up from $449.99
  • Xbox Series X 1TB Digital: $749.99, up from $599.99
  • Xbox Series X 1TB Disc: $799.99, up from $649.99
UK pricing
  • Xbox Series S 512GB: £429.99, up from £299.99
  • Xbox Series S 1TB: £519.99, up from £349.99
  • Xbox Series X 1TB Digital: £619.99, up from £449.99
  • Xbox Series X 1TB Disc: £669.99, up from £499.99
Europe pricing
  • Xbox Series S 512GB: €499.99, up from €349.99
  • Xbox Series S 1TB: €599.99, up from €399.99
  • Xbox Series X 1TB Digital: €749.99, up from €549.99
  • Xbox Series X 1TB Disc: €799.99, up from €599.99

The Xbox Series X price and Xbox Series S price changes are most noticeable on the lower-cost models, which were originally positioned as the affordable entry point into the current Xbox generation. In Europe, the 512GB Series S is now €150 more expensive than before, while the 1TB Series S is rising by €200.

Why Microsoft Is Raising Xbox Prices

Microsoft said console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5 times and warned that costs could double again by fall 2027. The company said the wider consumer electronics industry is being affected by the components crisis, but consoles are under particular pressure because they are often sold at low margins or below manufacturing cost.

The pressure is tied to rising demand for memory and storage components, including from AI data center hardware. That demand has made it harder for consumer electronics companies to keep device prices stable. TechGenyz previously covered how Xbox’s hardware costs and strategy appeared in the Xbox reset memo, which framed console supply and component costs as major business challenges.

Microsoft said it is working with retailers on trade-in programs, previously played consoles, certified refurbished units and financing options to make Xbox hardware more accessible. Even with those options, the Xbox price hike means buyers will face a higher entry cost for both digital and disc-based Xbox consoles.

Xbox Price Hike: What Buyers Should Know

For buyers comparing models, the Xbox price hike changes the value calculation. The Xbox Series S price remains lower than the Series X, but the gap is smaller once storage needs, Game Pass subscriptions and new game purchases are included.

The Xbox Series X price is now close to premium hardware territory in several markets. That could push some players toward refurbished consoles, trade-in deals or waiting for bundles, especially if Xbox Series X/S prices rise further because of component shortages.

Fans React to the Xbox Price Hike

The new prices have triggered strong reactions from Xbox fans, with many questioning whether the console business can keep raising hardware prices this late in the generation. Some players have pointed out that, instead of becoming cheaper over time, the Xbox Series X/S family is now significantly more expensive than it was at launch.

That reaction is understandable. A £669.99 Xbox Series X with a disc drive is a difficult sell for buyers who may also be budgeting for new games, subscriptions and accessories. The Series S remains the cheapest current Xbox console, but its value proposition is weaker after another major price jump.

GTA 6 Xbox Demand Could Complicate the Timing

The timing is also awkward because GTA 6 is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in years. Rockstar’s game is set for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, which means players who have not yet upgraded will need current-generation hardware to play it on console.

If GTA 6 Xbox demand rises closer to the game’s launch, higher prices could make the upgrade decision harder for buyers. TechGenyz has also reported on related GTA 6 pricing concerns and GTA 6 scam warnings, both signs of how much attention the game is already drawing before release.

Xbox Series X/S Prices Rise as Console Costs Keep Climbing

Xbox is not the only platform facing pricing pressure. Sony has also raised PS5 prices in several markets, and the broader games industry has been moving toward higher prices for premium software and hardware. Microsoft’s latest Xbox increase shows that the old expectation of consoles becoming cheaper deep into a generation no longer holds as firmly as it once did.

For now, the message for Xbox buyers is clear: Xbox Series X/S prices rise at a time when the same hardware is about to face renewed demand. With GTA 6 on the horizon and component costs still rising, console pricing could remain a major issue through the rest of 2026.

Xbox Series X/S Prices Rise FAQWhen do the new Xbox prices start?

The new Xbox prices start on August 1, 2026, according to Microsoft. That is when Xbox Series X/S prices rise across affected markets.

Why did the Xbox price hike happen?

Microsoft says the Xbox price hike is linked to higher storage and memory costs, which have made console hardware more expensive to produce.

Will GTA 6 Xbox demand affect console buying?

GTA 6 Xbox demand could make the price rise feel sharper for players who still need to buy current-generation hardware before Rockstar’s launch.
