A Startup Is Teaching Robots To 3D Print Adobe Homes From Local Soil

Outside Luling, Texas, a few houses are seemingly just growing out of a field. There are no masons stacking bricks, no crew pouring concrete forms, no lumber frame waiting to be wrapped in drywall. There’s just a robot suspended from cables placing a site-sourced adobe mixture, pressing and hammering it into walls.

The machine is called Terry. Built by Terran Robotics, it turns one of humanity’s oldest building materials into a very modern experiment in home construction.

At an experimental ranch called Proto-Town, Terran Robotics is trying to promote a simple idea: use the material already underfoot, move fewer heavy products around, and rely on robots to handle the slow, repetitive work. If the system scales beyond prototypes, it could offer a way to build homes with fewer trucks, fewer expensive materials, and a lower carbon footprint.

It’s no secret that homes cost too much to build.

Daniel Weddle, co-founder Terran Robotics, also feels that way. He’s been working on various experiments on affordable housing in Indiana, including tiny homes. Now, with co-founder Zach Dwiel, he’s looking for a way to automate construction while using the lowest-cost material available. Dirt.

“This is the cheapest material to build with,” Weddle told KXAN. “Our goal is affordable housing.”

Terran uses adobe, a mixture of clay-rich soil, water, and straw. The company says its walls can be made largely from material gathered on the building site, cutting the need for concrete trucks, structural steel, lumber framing, insulation, siding, and drywall.

Adobe is an ancient material, but that is part of its appeal. Earthen walls have sheltered people for centuries and have a few notable advantages. They absorb and release heat slowly, helping rooms stay cooler in the day and warmer after sunset. They can also soften sound and help regulate humidity.

Terran says it designs its walls around the standards in the International Residential Code’s Appendix AU, which covers cob construction, also known as monolithic adobe. “Monolithic” means the wall forms one continuous mass rather than a stack of blocks or bricks.

If the dirt is the heart and soul of this idea, the 3D-printing robot is the muscle behind t he vision.

Terry doesn’t look like a factory robot. It hangs from cables stretched between four towers around the building site, moving through the air like a giant 3D printer.

Terry also requires a bit of help here and there. Workers gather and prepare the soil mixture, then place the adobe within the robot’s reach. The robot lowers a claw, picks up roughly 10-pound chunks, carries them to the wall, and drops them into place. Then it switches tools. A hammer attachment pounds and shapes the wet clay, compressing each layer into a smoother, stronger mass.

This isn’t your conventional 3D printing, where a nozzle extrudes concrete or plastic along a preset path. Terran describes it as an AI-driven pick-and-place system. The robot uses cameras to watch the growing wall, while software checks for uneven spots and adjusts the next move.

“It’s kind of trying to replicate how a human might build an adobe house,” software engineer Anastasia Nikoulina told KXAN. “We are able to get very precise in terms of where it’s positioned relative to the wall and how much it’s hitting the wall to compress it into shape.”

“Our robot is constantly using cameras to understand the world around it and react to what’s happening,” Dwiel explained to Tiny House Talk.

The first Texas home has two adobe walls and two wood-framed sides. It’s promising, but it’s not a finished product just yet.Terran plans for the next version to be built entirely from earth.

The company also has to teach Terry one of construction’s humbler but harder skills: making a clean corner. A straight wall can rise in layers. A corner has to turn precisely, carry weight, define a room, and keep rain from finding a path inside.

Once the robot finishes the walls, familiar trades still step in. Electricians, plumbers, and HVAC crews install the systems that make the structure livable. The earthen exterior also needs a protective coating so it can withstand storms and years of weather.

Terran says the cable system can fit in a truck, be set up by two people in a day, and eventually span a workspace as large as a football field. The company plans to build more than 20 homes over the next year, all from dirt.

Its ambitions reach beyond Proto-Town. In Bloomington, Indiana, Terran is working on accessory dwelling units. In Columbus, Indiana, the company is pursuing “pocket neighborhoods,” clusters of homes on land that might otherwise hold a single house.

“If we’re gonna solve this housing crisis, density is a big, big key,” founding designer Jacob Bower-Bir told Tiny House Talk.

Many futuristic housing systems dazzle in demonstrations, then falter against permits, soil, weather, financing and cost. Terry now faces that same test. At Proto-Town, the idea has taken physical form: a machine reaches down, lifts the earth and starts turning dirt into shelter.
