EVgo is adding more than 500 DC fast-charging stalls at shopping centers across the US, giving drivers more places to charge while they buy groceries, grab lunch, or run errands.

The chargers are going to properties owned by Brixmor Property Group. If that name means nothing to you, think open-air neighborhood shopping centers rather than enclosed malls – the kind anchored by a supermarket, discount store, or other everyday retailer. Brixmor owns 346 of them across 29 states, with major tenants including Kroger, Publix, TJ Maxx, and Ross Stores.

Once the expanded rollout is complete, at least 90 Brixmor shopping centers – more than a quarter of its portfolio – will have EVgo fast chargers. The new locations will include sites in Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Deployment is scheduled to begin later this year. The first new site is planned for Barn Plaza in Doylestown, around 30 miles north of Philadelphia. That center is anchored by Whole Foods Market and also includes Barnes & Noble, Pottery Barn, and Shake Shack, among other retailers and restaurants.

Each new Brixmor site will feature up to 12 EVgo DC fast chargers. EVgo hasn’t yet disclosed the charging speeds or the complete list of participating shopping centers.

“Drivers across the US want infrastructure options that integrate seamlessly into their routines, and shopping centers are an ideal place to get groceries, grab a bite, or shop while charging,” said Scott Levitan, executive vice president of growth at EVgo.

Shopping-center charging makes sense: Drivers can use the 20 to 30 minutes they would otherwise spend waiting in the car to browse, eat, or shop.

EVgo first installed chargers at a Brixmor shopping center in Pleasanton, California, in 2016.
