In 1997, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen completed his $194 million purchase of the Seattle Seahawks, stepping in after previous owner Ken Behring had attempted to move the franchise to Southern California.

Nearly three decades, four Super Bowl appearances, and two championships later, Allen's estate has agreed to sell the Seahawks for an astonishing $9.612 billion.

The buyer is a group led by Silicon Valley billionaire Vinod Khosla and his son, Neal Khosla. Assuming the transaction receives approval from at least 24 of the NFL's 32 owners, it will become the most expensive franchise sale in league history, easily surpassing the $6.05 billion paid for the Washington Commanders in 2023.

For the Paul G. Allen Estate, the sale represents one of the greatest investments in sports history. The Seahawks increased in value by approximately $9.4 billion during the Allen era and are being sold for nearly 50 times the original purchase price.

For the Khoslas, the deal represents an extraordinary leap into the NFL's ownership elite. Just one year after becoming small minority owners of the San Francisco 49ers, the father and son are preparing to sell that stake and take control of one of the 49ers' biggest divisional rivals.

The Seahawks Sale

The agreement remains subject to approval by NFL owners. A minimum of 24 of the league's 32 ownership groups must vote in favor of the transaction before the Khoslas can take control.

Owners have reportedly been asked to reserve a date in late August for a special meeting to consider the deal. The parties hope to complete the transfer before the beginning of the regular season.

Although the Seahawks did not formally disclose the terms of the agreement, multiple league sources reported a purchase price of $9.612 billion.

The full composition of the Khosla investment group has not yet been revealed. That is an important detail because Vinod Khosla, whose personal net worth is estimated at approximately $14 billion, is unlikely to finance the entire purchase himself.

The exact financing structure has not been disclosed. A transaction of this size would typically combine a substantial investment from the controlling owner with capital from minority partners and a limited amount of NFL-approved debt. Vinod Khosla would serve as the controlling owner, while the other members of the group would hold smaller, non-controlling interests.

"We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks," Khosla said in a statement announcing the agreement. "We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere."

Who Is Vinod Khosla?

Vinod Khosla is a technology entrepreneur and venture capitalist who has a net worth of $14 billion.

Born in India, Khosla earned an electrical engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology before moving to the United States. He received a master's degree in biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and later earned an MBA from Stanford.

In 1982, Khosla co-founded Sun Microsystems with Andy Bechtolsheim, Scott McNealy, and Bill Joy. The company became one of Silicon Valley's most important computer manufacturers, producing workstations, servers, and software used by businesses and developers around the world.

Sun went public in 1986 and was ultimately acquired by Oracle for approximately $7.4 billion in 2010.

By then, Khosla had already moved into venture capital. After working as a partner at Kleiner Perkins, he founded Khosla Ventures in 2004.

The firm became known for making aggressive investments in technology, artificial intelligence, healthcare, clean energy, and other industries capable of generating enormous — but far from guaranteed — returns. Its investments have included OpenAI, DoorDash, Instacart, Square, Impossible Foods, and numerous biotechnology and energy startups.

That venture portfolio, combined with Khosla's earlier technology fortune, made him one of the wealthiest and most influential investors in Silicon Valley.

The Khoslas Must Sell Their 49ers Stake

There is one especially awkward wrinkle to the transaction: Vinod and Neal Khosla are already NFL owners.

In May 2025, the father and son acquired a 3.1% minority interest in the San Francisco 49ers. The investment reportedly valued the 49ers at more than $8.5 billion, implying that the Khoslas' stake was worth at least $263 million.

The family's connection to the 49ers extended well beyond a financial investment. Vinod and Neal were longtime season-ticket holders, attending games together at Candlestick Park before following the team to Levi's Stadium.

Neal described joining the 49ers ownership group as a dream come true.

That dream lasted approximately one season.

The NFL does not allow an owner to hold equity in two different franchises. To complete the Seahawks purchase, the Khosla family must sell its entire 3.1% interest in the 49ers.

The move will transform the Khoslas from minority investors and lifelong supporters of San Francisco into the controlling owners of one of the team's biggest NFC West rivals.

Paul Allen's Incredible Return

Paul Allen's acquisition of the Seahawks was never purely a financial investment.

Previous owner Ken Behring had attempted to relocate the team to Southern California, creating a crisis over the franchise's future in Seattle. Local leaders persuaded Allen to intervene, and voters approved public financing that helped make a new stadium possible.

Allen agreed to purchase the team in 1996, and the $194 million transaction became official in 1997.

Under Allen's ownership, the Seahawks developed into one of the NFL's strongest organizations. The franchise reached four Super Bowls and won championships following the 2013 and 2025 seasons.

The financial return was equally remarkable:

  • Paul Allen's purchase price: $194 million
  • Agreed 2026 sale price: $9.612 billion
  • Increase in value: $9.418 billion
  • Investment multiple: 49.5 times
  • Percentage gain: Approximately 4,855%

That calculation does not include the hundreds of millions of dollars in operating income and distributions the franchise likely generated during the Allen era.

Why The Allen Estate Is Selling

Paul Allen died in October 2018 with a net worth of approximately $20 billion. His sister, Jody Allen, became executor of his estate and assumed control of his sports holdings, including the Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers.

Paul's estate plan directed that his assets eventually be sold and that the proceeds be used to support charitable causes.

The Seahawks were therefore expected to reach the market at some point, even as Jody Allen continued overseeing the franchise after her brother's death.

The estate formally placed the team up for sale in February 2026, shortly after the Seahawks won their second Super Bowl.

The timing gave the estate a powerful negotiating position. It was selling a reigning champion with a stable front office, a successful young head coach, a favorable stadium arrangement, and one of the NFL's most loyal fan bases.

Rather than discounting a struggling organization in need of a turnaround, the estate could invite billionaires to compete for a franchise at the peak of its success.

What The Khoslas Are Buying

The Khosla group is acquiring much more than a football roster.

The Seahawks play at Lumen Field, one of the NFL's loudest and most recognizable stadiums. The franchise had sold out 190 consecutive games when the agreement was announced.

The team's lease runs through 2031 and includes three additional 10-year extension options, potentially providing the Seahawks with long-term stadium stability.

The Khoslas are also inheriting an established football operation. General manager John Schneider is under contract through 2031, while head coach Mike Macdonald is under contract through 2029.

Macdonald led the Seahawks to a championship in only his second season as head coach. Most of the players who contributed offensive or defensive snaps in the Super Bowl victory remained on the roster after the season.

That combination of organizational stability, recent success, and regional loyalty helps explain why the team commanded such a massive premium.

Previous published estimates had valued the Seahawks at approximately $6.7 billion. The agreed purchase price came in nearly $3 billion above that figure.

Franchise valuations are ultimately estimates. An actual sale reveals what buyers are willing to pay when a rare asset becomes available.

There are only 32 NFL teams, and most remain under the control of the same families for generations. A billionaire who passes on one opportunity may wait decades for another franchise to reach the market.

A New Era In Seattle

Vinod and Neal Khosla are not purchasing a distressed team in need of rescue.

They are buying the reigning Super Bowl champions, a valuable stadium operation, a deeply established regional brand, and a franchise with the personnel to remain competitive.

Their immediate challenge will not be fixing the Seahawks. It will be convincing fans that the new ownership group can preserve the culture and stability created during the Paul Allen era.

The Khoslas will also face inevitable scrutiny over their history as devoted 49ers fans and their recent ownership stake in San Francisco.

But sports loyalties can change quickly when nearly $10 billion is involved.

The transaction closes one of the most successful ownership eras in professional sports. Paul Allen preserved the Seahawks' future in Seattle, helped build a championship organization, and left behind an asset that ultimately attracted the largest purchase price in NFL history.

For the Khoslas, the deal transforms them from small minority investors into the controlling owners of an NFL champion. It also gives them the most expensive team ever sold in league history.
