Armani Tyrell Waite is accused of shooting an employee at the store located at 50 North MacDade Boulevard in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, police said.
Waite was in the self-checkout area of the store when he is accused of getting into a verbal dispute with another man who was about 10 to 12 feet away from him and legally armed, Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said.
During this argument, Waite pulled out a gun and fired three shots which missed the other man, DA Rouse explained. One of the bullets flew threw a glass door and hit an employee who was standing outside.
The Walmart employee was shot once in the calf, according to police. There were about 30 people around Waite when he opened fire, Rouse said.
“This could have been an absolute calamity,” Rouse said at a press conference on Monday, Aug. 3. “There is no reason for this to have occurred.”
Law enforcement personnel at the scene reported finding the gun Waite used right next to where he had dropped his car keys as he ran from the store.
“I could see something ricochet to the floor and then it like flashed. So, I’m assuming that was the bullet,” a woman, who did not reveal her full name, told NBC10. “Then they rushed everybody to the back of the store.”
The woman told NBC10 children were inside the Walmart at the time of the shooting. Another woman – who also did not reveal her full name – told NBC10 she was with her 3-year-old son inside the store when the shots were fired.
“I was waiting to pay. And the crazy part about it is, my friend was like, ‘Oh let’s go to that aisle.’ I was like, ‘No, I don’t want to go.’ I was just like, ‘I don’t know why they want to go to that aisle,'” she said. “And that’s where it happened. So I don’t know, the prayer I prayed before I went outside today was a good one.”
The employee was taken to the hospital. Police said her injury is not life-threatening and she’s expected to recover.
Witnesses said other employees rushed customers to safety and that they sheltered-in-place inside the store for about an hour.
Over the weekend, Darby Township Police identified Waite as the suspect in the shooting. He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, firearms not to be carried without a license and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.
On Monday, Aug. 3, law enforcement sources announced that Waite was in custody after turning himself in, Rouse said.
Walmart issued a statement to NBC10 on Saturday, saying they are working with law enforcement on the incident.
“The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority. We’re grateful to first responders for their swift response and are working closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation,” the company said.
Attorneys for Waite told NBC10 that they are waiting on his hearing and believe this is a defendable case.
Waite is being held on $1 million cash bail.
