Massport approved a preliminary renovation plan of Logan Airport’s Terminal C on Thursday that would result in a bigger and brighter modernized space.
The billion-dollar plan would create “a light-filled grand hall similar to those in European airports,” according to The Boston Globe, and include new seating, gates, and more restaurants and stores.
About 30 percent of Logan’s passengers pass through Terminal C, which serves mostly JetBlue, but also Aer Lingus, Cape Air, Etihad Airways, and TAP Air Portugal passengers, according to the report. Boston is JetBlue’s largest hub after JFK in New York and the JetBlue terminal at Logan is 60 years old.
Terminal C’s long, outdated corridors that house the gates would be torn down and replaced with a single hexagonal structure with soaring ceilings and skylights where travelers could see their boarding gate from the grand hall.
JetBlue would partner with Vantage Group for the renovation, and the firm would handle the construction costs and consult with Massport on the design.
“This is not about adding more gates,” Rich Davey, CEO of Massport, told the Globe. “This is really about bringing us a modern terminal that can handle our current passenger flow. Part of the challenge we face is that the terminal was built for 1960s traffic. So whether it’s the concessions, whether it’s the restrooms, even the hold rooms, there isn’t enough space to accommodate the size of aircraft today.”
Massport served 4 million passengers last month, its busiest June on record.
The renovations would not impact the two new lounges coming to Terminal C — the JetBlue lounge opening later this year and the two-story American Express Centurian Lounge opening in 2029. Also, Logan’s new remote terminal in Framingham would continue to bring passengers to Terminal C.
The project would break ground in a year and the renovation would take about five years, according to the report.
