One of the Revolution’s most important contributors in the team’s turnaround through the first half of the 2026 MLS season is staying around for a little while longer.

Matt Turner, recently returned from his time with the U.S. national team at the World Cup, was in New England on a one-year loan after a deal was secured in August of 2025. Now, shortly before the loan was set to expire, the Revolution extended it.

According to a team release on Monday, New England has extended Turner’s loan from French club Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) through Dec. 31, 2026. The club then has an option to extend the loan again through Dec. 31,2027. In addition, the Revolution will then have an option to buy Turner’s contract outright after the second loan.

In the announcement, Turner is cited as being a “TAM-eligible player for New England,” meaning that his contract can be categorized as someone the club fits under the salary cap using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). This could be an important distinction for the club, given that Turner has been classified for the past year as a Designated Player.

Designated Players are important pieces on an MLS roster, as their salaries do not count against the salary cap. The possibility of New England being able to convert Turner into a non-Designated Player opens up the potential of another major signing (though the team could still classify him as a DP if it’s advantageous for their cap position).

More than what it could mean for a potential signing, the retention of Turner provides a very tangible shot in the arm for the Revolution in the short term.

The 32-year-old has arguably been the best goalkeeper in MLS in 2026, helping the Revolution charge to fourth place in the Eastern Conference prior to the league’s pause for the World Cup.

Much like he did in his first tenure with New England (from 2018-2022), Turner’s shot-stopping talent helped sway results.

And as the Revolution look to charge into the second half of the MLS season — which begins at Gillette Stadium against Toronto FC on July 22 — it will be with a little more assurance about their goalkeeper’s future.
