Korean foundry Samsung has teased new customers for its 2-nanometer chip manufacturing technology to build chips for cloud service providers and high performance computing (HPC) companies. The firm revealed the new deals during its earnings call in Korea earlier today, with management adding that it expects to more than double its 2-nanometer projects for 2026 compared to last year.
Samsung Promises Ramp Up Of 2-nanometer Production In The Second Half Of 2026 & Remains Unclear About Profitability Of Foundry BusinessOne of the biggest debates surrounding Samsung's foundry business has been its profitability. On this front, June was an important month for the firm, as a report from the Korean media suggested that the business returned to monthly profitability. The report quoted the market and admitted that the company does not post separate profit and loss figures for the foundry business.
Now, during its second quarter earnings call, Samsung's management discussed the business's profitability. Management outlined that "the combined effects of higher utilization, improved yields, and price increases have driven a significant year-over-year improvement, and the recovery is now gaining momentum."
However, it cautioned that since the foundry business was based on orders, "the combined effects of higher utilization, improved yields, and price increases have driven a significant year-over-year improvement, and the recovery is now gaining momentum" for the profitability. As a result, management took a cautious note and remarked that it expected to "achieve a turnaround in the near future."
The conversation also covered Samsung's orders for the 2-nanometer chip manufacturing technology. When asked about an update related to major foundry business customers, Samsung commented that it had "secured 2nm projects from a major CSP customer and HPC customers." According to the company, these customers have started their design work for the products to be manufactured with the 2-nanometer process.
Samsung added that it was also under discussion with Broadcom and others for projects on advanced manufacturing process technologies. Samsung and Broadcom created headlines recently when they announced a major $200 billion memorandum of understanding (MOU) for collaboration in the memory and foundry businesses. The collaboration is expected to last over the next five years and focus on the 2-nanometer technology for Broadcom's chips.
Samsung's management believes that these discussions and the projects are evidence of strong momentum. Based on this momentum, it outlined that it expects "the number of 2nm projects secured in 2026 to more than double year over year."
