Inverness-based UK ISP Brawband (HighNet), which primarily sells home broadband services over CityFibre’s full fibre (FTTP) network around various Scottish cities and towns (e.g. Inverness, Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Edinburgh), appears to be suffering from a major service outage today.

The problems appear to have started at around midnight last night (usually when this happens, we suspect a maintenance event could be the cause) and reports have continued to grow as people got out of bed to start the day. Feedback from customers suggests that the loss of service is quite widespread across multiple locations in Scotland.

At the time of writing, we couldn’t see other CityFibre providers reporting outages in Scotland, so it may be Brawband specific, but this requires some further checking.

Service Outage – Connections Down across Network

We’re currently aware of an outage affecting customers on our network.

Engineers are aware and working on a fix, updates will be posted here as and when we have them. We don’t have an expected fix time as yet.

The ISP posted a brief update a moment ago, which stated that their “engineers are still working hard to restore service, unfortunately no ETA on a fix time“. The provider’s phone lines and mailboxes are incredibly busy at the moment, so it’s recommended to keep an eye on their Service Status page instead (well done to Brawband for actually having such a page, unlike others we’ve covered this week).

UPDATE 10:58am

Brawband has identified the problem on their “core network“, but says the fix will require a “rebuild of equipment … this is a significant piece of work which our technical engineers are treating with urgency.”

UPDATE 12:20pm

The latest update, which was post just now, states: “I’m sorry to say work is not expected to be complete by the end of the day. I know this isn’t the update you were hoping for- I appreciate your patience.”

Apparently the “rebuild is nearing completion” and the ISP is starting to see customer connections come back online.

UPDATE 5:08pm

Good news, it’s back online: “After a very busy day our engineers (shout out to John!!) have completed the rebuild and service has been restored. If you remain offline, please power cycle your router by turning it off and on again, I had to do this when I arrived home to get mine back online.”
