An Xbox 360 catalogue is planned to be rolled out across 2027 and 2028.

Following its recently announced plans to bring original Xbox games to PC, Microsoft is also reportedly doing the same for Xbox 360 titles, with a leaked document highlighting a 2027-2028 roadmap for rolling out an Xbox 360 catalogue for PC and next-gen consoles.
Leaked Microsoft documents acquired by The Verge
This comes as part of the studio’s wider disc-to-digital program, to which a leaked document sent to Microsoft’s partners was seen by sites like The Verge. A portion of the document outlining the roadmap for the studio’s backwards compatibility (back-compat) was also posted on social media by The Verge’s Tom Warren, which states that Xbox 360 titles are planned to be rolled out for PC and next-gen Xbox devices such as the upcoming Project Helix between 2027 and 2028.
While no details on which titles will be eligible were revealed, this initiative not only makes the porting process easier for game studios, as Microsoft will handle the emulation process internally thanks to its proprietary emulation technology, but it also opens the way for gamers to get their hands on beloved gaming franchises that never made it past the Xbox 360, such as the two original Crackdown titles, Fable 2, or numerous Gears of War titles that didn’t make it to PC or modern consoles.
In addition, The Verge also reports that the original Xbox games were set to begin disc-to-digital testing for insiders last month, with general availability set for August, but the beta was delayed, so it’s unclear if Microsoft will be able to stick to the leaked timeline.

The document also listed details for players to attain a digital version of a game that they currently own on a physical disc, stating that if a player inserts a disc into their Series X|S or Xbox One consoles, they will be granted a digital license that’s bound to the disc and their account, one that will stay with the player across their devices until the “disc changes hands”, to which digital ownership will be transferred to the next person.
This move is no doubt tied to the gaming landscape’s increasing push towards the digital format, one kickstarted by Sony’s controversial move to cease production of physical games starting in January 2028. It remains to be seen how Microsoft will handle things on their end moving forward, but the way things are going, it won’t be surprising if they follow suit and go all in on digital games too, despite gamers’ pleas for the preservation of physical media.
