Still working my way through this (it's packed pretty densely, at least for my little mind), but I'm looking forward to people here who have backgrounds in history and economics and politics (and the history of political economy, even) weighing in. It's one of my favorite things about MetaFilter.

The first paragraph insisting that leftists are constantly trying to get rid of capitalism and that the right are the true defenders of workers rights caused me to bail.

^^ Thanks I'll read more about this - I'm not an expert in land economics but I'd understood the breakup of the Zaibatsu was halted or reversed during the Red Purge and that to the extent that it proceeded they re-formed as Keiretsu, but the term Zaibatsu was still current in Japanese popular culture.

The rightward lean of people who live in rural areas is a US phenomenon, not a universal one. There are countries in Europe (Portugal, for one) where leftist parties are strongest in rural provinces.
