there are apparently a lot of mushrooms that are poisonous to some people and edible for others. unlike food allergies, it’s not an allergic immune reaction, it’s mushroom poisoning but only for some people

This is actually an extremely fascinating rabbithole that I would highly recommend. There are many different mycotoxins. Some of them cause hallucinations, some of them cause kidney damage, some of them cause paralysis, some of them cause months long depression(? this in particular made me go ‘what the fuck?’), some of them cause liver damage, some of them cause severe gastrointestinal distress, some of them are only activated if you consume alcohol with the mushrooms. In addition, many fungi absorb contaminants from the surrounding area, such as heavy metals.

The more I read about fungi, the less I understand them. I love that.
