Fall in Love with Data this February

Posted on February 3, 2026

Celebrate International Love Data Week with the Libraries this February! Not only are we running a series of data-focused workshops, but we’re also accepting submissions for our Data Storytelling Challenge until February 12.

Register today for a Data Workshop:

Data Discovery for your Research: Social Sciences - February 10, 2026, 1pm-2:20pm (Zoom workshop)

  • This practical workshop will be conducted by members of the York University Libraries' Data Services Team. It will introduce various sources of data, such as Statistics Canada and international data producers. In addition, we will explore strategies to locate and evaluate relevant datasets for research in the social sciences.

Data Discovery for your Research: Health Sciences – February 11, 2026, 2:30pm-3:50pm (Zoom workshop)

  • This practical workshop will be conducted by members of the York University Libraries' Data Services Team. It will introduce various sources of data, such as Statistics Canada and international data producers. In addition, we will explore strategies to locate and evaluate relevant datasets for research in the health sciences.

Create a Data Management Plan for your Grant Application – February 12, 2026, 1pm-2:30pm (Zoom workshop)

  • Do you need to prepare a Data Management Plan (DMP) for a grant application? Attend this workshop to learn about: (1) The value of a DMP; (2) Using the DMP Assistant tool to access a funding application-stage DMP template; and (3) Specific sections & questions you should address in your funding application-stage DMP. Participants will walk away from this workshop with a set of practical resources and templates they can use to begin creating a DMP for their grant application.

Publishing your research data in a data repository – February 17, 2026, 12:30pm-2pm (Zoom workshop)

  • Many scholarly journals are now requiring authors to submit a Data Availability Statement (DAS). Because of this requirement, the importance of publishing research data in a data repository and obtaining a permanent URL, such as a digital object identifier (DOI), is becoming increasingly important. This workshop introduces the guiding principles of data publishing. During this workshop, you will learn: (1) How to prepare your data for sharing and long-term access; (2) How to select a data repository that meets your needs; and (3) A brief overview of the data deposit process for York’s institutional research data repository, York University’s Dataverse, will also be provided.

Who's (not) counted: finding published data about ethnic and racialized populations in Canada - February 24, 2026, 1pm-2:20pm (Zoom workshop)

  • Are you looking for data about racialized populations and/or ethnic populations in Canada, as it relates to your research topic? It can be a challenge, and you are not alone! In the past couple of years, there have been several calls to actions from the research community calling for governments to collect more ethno-racial data, especially as it relates to social determinants of health, employment, health care, and education.

Finalize your submission for the Libraries’ Data Storytelling Challenge

This challenge provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to showcase and grow your data visualization skills. The Libraries are accepting submissions for the challenge until February 12, 2026!

Students will get the chance to win cash prizes and participate in a curated and juried exhibition of top submissions. Read this webpage for more information about the challenge and get your tickets to join the free opening reception on March 5!

Celebrate Love Data Week by attending workshops offered by other institutions!

Because Love Data Week is an international event, you can also sign-up for virtual events happening at other universities and colleges across the world. There are lots of great workshops on managing your research data, finding secondary data, and using tools like Excel and OpenRefine to analyze data.
