CNBC is facing flak for a 'ten worst states to live in' ranking released last week, after not a single blue state made the cut.

Instead, Republican-led states rounded out the negative list exclusively. The ranking listed - from tenth-worst to first - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Missouri, Utah, Georgia, Louisiana, Indiana, Texas and Tennessee.

Each state received a 'quality of life score' based on criteria such as 'the cost and availability of childcare, inclusiveness of state laws and reproductive rights.'

The list itself was a subset of the network's annual 'America’s top states for business' analysis.

Tennessee's score suffered due to laws seen as discriminatory toward transgender people, as well as high rates of violent crime and fatal drug use, according to CNBC.

The Volunteer State boasts one of the top-ranked move-in markets in the country, several critics have since pointed out.

A law 'requiring transgender people to use [bathroom] facilities designated for their sex at birth' was still cited, as was a resolution signed by state Governor Bill Lee that designated June 'Nuclear Family Month.' CNBC said the state 'deliberately' slighted celebrators of Pride.

Conservatives and politicians are now accusing the network of harboring a liberal bias.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the ranking 'nonsense.'

'If Tennessee was really the worst state to live in, people wouldn’t be moving there in large numbers, which they are,' he wrote on X.

Oklahoma's governor, Kevin Stitt, similarly asked: 'Why would “the worst states to live in” also be the states that the most people are moving to?'

Texas Congressman Lance Gooden brought up his state's low cost of living and lack of a state income tax, after it received poor marks in healthcare, inclusiveness and reproductive rights.

'Here's another garbage list from the mainstream media!' he wrote.

Podcaster Patrick Bet-David pointed out that Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama were four of the top performers in terms of 2025 net migrations, based on CNBC's own statistics.

'"Ten worst states" based on what?' he wrote. 

States found to be losing the most citizens - such as California, New York and Illinois - were also absent from CNBC's 'quality of life' list.

Factors like childcare, air quality and healthcare were also weighed by CNBC.

Indiana ranked worst for childcare availability, contributing to its third-worst rank.

Georgia, which was fifth-worst, was chided for its 'few protections for LGBTQ+ people, making it one of America's least inclusive states.'

The Daily Mail approached CNBC for comment. The network was spun off by Comcast in January to Versant Media Group.
